
There’s no single right age to start teaching children about AI, but much like screen time guidance from the NHS and World Health Organisation, it’s something parents can introduce gradually at different stages as children grow.
Using this staged approach is similar to NSPCC guidance, which emphasises the importance of starting conversations about technology and online risks from an early age, and adapting those discussions as children grow and begin using digital tools more independently.
Ages five to seven: Awareness
Children should be introduced to AI in simple terms, such as that it can generate answers and images, but it isn’t human and won’t always get things right.
The focus should be on keeping explanations simple and setting early boundaries, for example, not sharing personal or confidential information.
Ages eight to 11: Understanding
As children move through primary school, they will be taught how to use digital tools more independently, both in the classroom and when doing homework.
Ofcom data shows that children’s use of digital tools becomes more independent as they get older. At this point, parents should actively teach children to question what they see, helping them recognise that AI can produce misleading or incorrect information.
This is also when children may begin using AI for homework, making it important they understand the difference between using it for support and relying on it entirely.
Ages 12-14: Responsibility
As children enter their teenage years, they tend to spend more time online on their own, whether that’s using apps, doing homework or browsing without direct supervision. At this stage, they may already be using AI, making it an important point for parents to start having more direct conversations about how it works.
Research from Internet Matters shows that 42% of children who use AI chatbots already use them for schoolwork, including revision, writing support and answering questions. The same research also found that AI tools are becoming widely used among young people, with many not questioning whether the information they receive is reliable.
This is when conversations should shift towards risks and behaviour. Talking through risks like misinformation, deepfakes and biased AI outputs can help children understand that not everything they see is accurate and help build the habit of questioning information rather than taking it at face value.
Age 15+: Independence
By the mid-to-late teenage years, AI use is likely to become routine across schoolwork, research and everyday tasks, especially with GCSEs, further education, and work on the horizon.
As teenagers are more independent at this stage, the focus should shift towards how AI is used in practise. Parents should teach children that AI should be used as a support tool, rather than a shortcut, and how misuse could affect their education and future opportunities.

By gradually building that awareness, from primary school through to their teenage years, will leave them far better prepared to use AI safely and responsibly as it becomes part of everyday life.”
